Would you like to compete?

Competitive skating info sheet

What you need

*A competition dress. Unlike a practice dress, a competition dress has beads, sequins or is otherwise “sparkly.” Prices range dramatically on these. If you’re being economical, used dress sales or ebay are excellent places to find dresses.

*White skate polish. Try to buy the brand polish to match the brand skate you have. Polish the night before a competition!

*Tights. Mondor 3345 is the style you are looking for.

*Extra laces

*Warm-up jacket. A zip-up jacket, fleece or sweater that looks “clean” and fits close to the body is idea. You want to look a little dressy. Avoid hoods.

*Music. Expect a bill of $25-$50 for a 1.5 minute program.

Costs

*Fees vary, but most competitions cost about $75 for the first event and $25 for additional events.

*After a competition, you will receive a coach’s bill. You are charged a fee for the coach's time at your competition, plus travel expenses. Expenses are divided by the number of skaters coached at the event. That means the more students attending an event, the more those expenses are shared.

*Competitive skaters need more than group lessons in order to prepare. One additional weekly practice, during which we do a 15-minute private lesson, is needed. The combined practice ice and lesson would cost an estimated $14 each time.

Scheduling logistics

*Competitions happen throughout the year.

*There is no set number of competitions that you must do a year. You can decide which do to based on your family's schedule and desire to travel.

*You are given the dates of a competition ahead of time, but you won’t know your competition day/time until about 2 weeks in advance.

*You want to be at the rink at least an hour in advance for a competition. Each event has a warm-up period of 5 minutes or less. Then, the skater leaves the ice until it’s their turn. Individual performances are about 1.5 minutes at this level. Results are usually posted within 30 minutes of the conclusion of the event. In all, expect to spend a minimum of 2 hours at the rink for each event.

*The top three skaters generally receive a medal or trophy.
